50 Vehicles - Page 1 of 3

It’s no great revelation that in this day and age there are cars available in almost every shape and size from small cars to giant cars and everything in between. In the past, during what some might call America’s Golden Age of Automobiles, the 1950’s, little cars were somewhat frowned upon and not entirely easy to find. However, nowadays there’s a place for every vehicle type and size no matter whether it’s city streets or country lanes that they occupy. Little cars aren’t seen as just smaller than their big brothers, but as agile, versatile and in many cases, sought after vehicles.

Definition

By definition, a small car, or a compact car, is larger than a sub-compact and bigger than a mid-size car. Not exactly the best reference, but that’s where little cars fit in with the rest of the gang.

Body Types

One might think that small cars are just that, cars that aren’t so big and all fall into that classification. However, little cars can be found in hatchback models, convertibles, coupes, sedans, station wagons, and multipurpose vehicles and sport utility vehicles that are based on small car frames. The Ford Focus is a great example of an entry in the small cars category.

History

Ford has a long history of producing small cars dating back to the 1960’s. The Ford Falcon was the first modern Ford in the class; this little car was produced from 1960 until 1970. Following the Falcon in Ford’s production of little cars was the Maverick, the Fairmont, the Escort, the Tempo and most recently the Focus. These small cars made by Ford filled a niche that became mainstream as people looked to little cars first for better gas mileage and later for a sporty style.

The first small cars, including the Ford Falcon, also gave rise to another new vehicle, the microbus, predecessor to the hugely popular minivans of later years.

Through the 1970’s and 1980’s, downsizing trends continued as more and more small cars hit the market. By the late 1980’s, American models were on par with their European counterparts, where little cars had be more well received in earlier decades.

Today’s Little Cars

Now that almost everyone has their nose up to anything that could be considered a gas guzzler, small cars are definitely here to stay. Technology has also enhanced the appeal of little cars with hybrid models and engine enhancements like Ford EcoBoost which increases gas mileage and can be found in several models.

2015 Ford Fusion

  • The Ford Fusion is a great example of everything small cars have to offer. Engineered with powertrain choices, EcoBoost engines and available Intelligent All-wheel Drive, you won’t miss out with this little car option.
  • Style, comfort and luxury don’t take a back seat, either. From wheel choices to great seating to state-of-the-art headlights and tail lamps the Fusion sets the standard for other small cars to follow.

So come down to Ford Country today and if you haven’t considered one before, see what the world of small cars has to offer!
